Google 3D Tile import is currently a BETA feature available for active SketchUp PlaceMaker subscribers only and will not work for Pay-As-You-Go customers or expired subscription licenses. This feature also requires SketchUp Pro Desktop version 2022 or newer.
To upgrade to a subscription or renew an expired subscription, please login to the PlaceMaker Portal or contact your local reseller.
Setup a Google API Key
To use this feature you will need your own Google API key and a valid credit card. Google provides a generous free tier but a credit card is required for data consumption in excess of the free tier.
Steps below outline how to acquire an API key and set it up for use in PlaceMaker.
Step 1 - Create a Google Account
If you already have a Google or Gmail Account, go to step 2.
Step 2 - Go to the Google Cloud Console and Login
Make sure you are logged in with your Google Account.
Step 3 - Create a Project
Near the top of the screen, you should see a drop-down menu that allows you to select or create a new project. Click the dropdown and create a new project.
Follow the dialog prompts to create a project or select an existing one.
Step 4 - Create an API Key
Ensure you are on the Credentials Page for the selected project.
At this point, Google may prompt you to enter payment information and ask a few questions about your organization. Payment information is needed by Google for the unlikely event that your data consumption exceeds the free tier.
Now click 'Create Credentials -> API key'.
Follow the dialog prompts to create your new API key. Do not apply any API key restrictions at this time as this could prevent your key from working with PlaceMaker.
Step 5 - Enable Map Tiles API for the new Key
Don't forget this important step! Your API key will not work unless you enable it specifically for the Map Tiles API.
Step 6 - Use your API Key in PlaceMaker
Return to the Keys & Credentials Page and click the 'Show Key' button to reveal your key. Copy and Paste your key into the PlaceMaker main dialog. Now you are ready to import Google Earth 3D Tiles!
