Since PlaceMaker was first released back in February 2017, we have offered the ability to easily import geo-located high-resolution satellite imagery directly into SketchUp. Our global imagery data was provided by DigitalGlobe.
As of June 26, 2019, due to technical constraints beyond our control, PlaceMaker is no longer able to offer the DigitalGlobe imagery to our customers. Instead, we are switching in the interim to Mapbox as our new provider of global high-resolution imagery for PlaceMaker customers. We are doing everything we can do ensure that PlaceMaker users are able to keep accessing high quality satellite imagery no matter where their area of interest is located.
PlaceMaker Nearmap imagery is not affected by this change.
Below is a detailed list of the impacts of this change:
DigitalGlobe Recent and Premium Imagery replaced by Mapbox Satellite
For PlaceMaker 2.1.0 and older, if you have DigitalGlobe Recent or Premium map style selected, the actual imagery imported by PlaceMaker will be Mapbox Satellite.
DigitalGlobe Street and Terrain Imagery replaced by Mapbox Street
For PlaceMaker 2.1.0 and older, if you have DigitalGlobe Street map style selected, the actual imagery imported by PlaceMaker will be Mapbox Street.
For PlaceMaker version 1, if you have DigitalGlobe Terrain map style selected, the actual imagery imported by PlaceMaker will be Mapbox Street. The Terrain imagery map style is not available from Mapbox.
PlaceMaker Select Place Tool will Display Mapbox Satellite Imagery instead of DigitalGlobe Premium
For PlaceMaker version 2.1.0 and older, when choosing a location with the PlaceMaker Select Place Tool, the imagery displayed in the window will now be Mapbox Satellite Imagery. Previously, it was DigitalGlobe Premium imagery.
Imagery Change FAQ
We expect you may have lots of questions about this change. Below, we will provide a FAQ of the most commonly expected questions related to this change:
Why the Change?
It was our desire to keep using DigitalGlobe imagery and we tried everything we could to keep it. However, DigitalGlobe unexpectedly decided to make a huge change to their imagery delivery system which resulted in several key features that PlaceMaker relies upon to be no longer available.
In order for PlaceMaker to keep offering high quality satellite imagery import features, we had no choice but to make this change.
What will happen during the change? Will PlaceMaker stop working?
The change will take place behind the scenes on our servers, for the most part. We plan to make the change sometime between 9am and 12pm June 26, 2019 CST. There is a small possibility that PlaceMaker's global imagery import feature (when source is set to DigitalGlobe) will briefly stop working so we recommend to not use that feature during the change period. If you attempted to import global imagery during this period and believe you lost some imagery credits, please submit a support request.
What happens to my DigitalGlobe imagery credits?
Your imagery credit balance will not be changed. You can use your existing DigitalGlobe credits to download the new Mapbox imagery. You can also purchase an imagery credits upgrade from the PlaceMaker website to obtain more imagery credits.
Do I need to update PlaceMaker to access the new imagery?
We plan to release an update in July 2019 that will remove any remaining references to DigitalGlobe imagery within PlaceMaker. Although you do not need to update PlaceMaker to import the new imagery, we always encourage you to keep your PlaceMaker version current so that you have access to the latest features and bug-fixes.
Licensed users can update PlaceMaker to the latest version here.
What is the quality of the Mapbox Satellite Imagery?
From our testing, we feel that the quality of the Mapbox Satellite Imagery is just as good or better than the DigitalGlobe Premium imagery (and it still has global coverage). In fact, a large portion of the Mapbox Satellite Imagery map is sourced from DigitalGlobe. If you have any feedback on the quality or coverage, please submit a support request and let us know what you think.
You can check out the new satellite imagery here.
How Recent is the Mapbox Satellite Imagery?
Like the previous DigitalGlobe imagery, the vintage of the Mapbox imagery does vary throughout the world. If you feel that imagery in your area of interest is out-dated, you can submit feedback to Mapbox and request that they update it.
Is this a permanent change?
We are considering Mapbox to be an interim provider of global satellite imagery for PlaceMaker. It is very possible that this will be a permanent change but we are continuing to pursue other potential global imagery sources and it is even possible that we will switch back to DigitalGlobe as a provider if they re-add the key features that they removed from their service.
We are committed to offering a high-quality global satellite imagery import solution for PlaceMaker users and will do everything we can to keep this feature available even if the source of the imagery were to change again in the future.
Does this affect Nearmap Imagery or Credits?
No, this change will not affect the Nearmap imagery import or your balance of Nearmap credits in any way. It is only related to imagery that is imported by PlaceMaker with DigitalGlobe as the selected source.
What are the Terms of Service for the Mapbox Imagery?
Thank you for continuing to support PlaceMaker. If you have any other questions about this change, please submit a support request.
