Editing a Profile - Doesn't work
Hi Dale
I did read the "Edit profile from Assembly window" and the button; I can tell you it still doesn't work and yes I am using a Mac. When will this get fixed? Its 3 years later now.
Anyway
I want to change the shape of a profile that is in an assembly. The button isn't obviously working.
I read that I can open the profile.skp file, modify it and save it. User guide pdf; so I did.
When I reload the assembly, I don't see the custom profile, still the old version.
I choose the profile in the assembly dialog choose the magnifying glass and select the custom profile with the change visible.
The change in the profile in the preview is not visible.
Choose OK and draw the assembly again. Still the old one.
In the assembly I delete the profile, save the assembly to overwrite the assembly.
I load the assembly to check if the deleted profile is really gone and it is.
I choose the plus in the assembly dialog I choose the magnifying glass to load my modified profile, still the wrong one. If I save the assembly and extrude the new assembly, its still wrong.
I did make a PDF with the images what steps I took, but can't upload that; so a link is provided.
Please check my steps and let me know where I went wrong.
As always thank you.

What version are you using? We believe we fixed this issue in version 3.2.0 and now we are on version 3.3.3

Please download and install the latest version from here:

I am experiencing the same problem and have 3.3.3 installed. When I edit the profile .skp file, save it, then return to my Sketchup file, I can't get the edited version to load to use. When I use the profile browser, I can see the thumbnail image of the profile I've edited. When I select that profile, it still does not update in the profeile dialog. Restarting Sketchup does not help. Any tips?

I apologize. I had a misunderstanding of what this issue was. After going through the post and your PDF in more detail, I realized my mistake and tested this myself and was surprised that it did not work.
Several year ago when we created the docs and user guide, this feature was likely working but at some point during development, we made a change that fixed a particular issue but the side effect was that it broke this type of workflow (i.e. editing the shape of a saved skp profile and reloading it).
Unfortunately, this feature simply does not work and, for reasons that are difficult to explain, fixing this feature (or rushing to release a fix I should say) might do more harm than good.
Rather, I would like to propose an alternative workflow for editing a profile in an assembly:
- Build a section of the assembly and double-click it to edit.
- Double-click the Profile Member that you want to edit.
- Click the 'Edit Profile' button in the main toolbar (Edit the Profile of the Active Profile Member)
- Edit the profile shape using the various SketchUp tools as desired.
- Click outside the profile shape to complete the edit.
- Now inside the assembly dialog, click the large button that is labelled with the profile name which will activate the profile picker tool.
- Click the profile member that you just edited in the viewport. This will update the profile used for the assembly (stored in the dialog) to the edited one that is in your model.
- Now when you click the assembly build tool, it should build with the edited profile. Saving and loading of this modified assembly should also work.
We will update our user guides to reflect this information. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Did the alternative workflow I proposed not work for you? I do not know when it will be fixed. I regret my previous choice of words. The point is that the issue is rather complicated and risky to fix since it could cause other features to break if the fix is not implemented correctly.
