New Skimp not working properly anymore - Ver. 2.0.1 (Sep 2024)
Skimp has always been one of my favourite SketchUp plug-ins, but I'm having several issues with the latest version (2.0.1 - Sep 2024)
I often use Skimp to simplify rides like rollercoasters and other equipment we obtain from vendors, the models usually come in Rhino and other CAD formats, but they are naturally very heavy, so we Skimp them to be able to plan entire theme parks for our clients in SketchUp/EnScape.
1) Doesn't simplify the mesh properly anymore
The algorithm seems to have changed, I'm getting a lot of variation trying to skimp similar objects, in my case over subdivided cylinders, and the mesh breaks much more often keeping the edges but losing the respective faces. The example below is extreme but the same happens if I select just a single column
2) Unclear previews
It used to automatically switch to a preview model which was very clear, a plain thin black wireframe against a white mesh surface, now, unfortunately, it forces you to see the material, and if it is dark, it can be really challenging to discern the new proposed mesh, also it overrides all styles you try to apply, so the only solution is to remove the texture and apply a white material to it. The button "Texture" doesn't seem to be working.
3) for some reason it refuses to allow the slider to move with some groups, I can't tell exactly why, but if I explode them and regroup everything, then it works, but that can easily ruin the mesh and sometimes you just can't do each group individually
Your plugin was perfect as it was before, and I understand that the company feels the need to add new features, but such changes would be welcome only if they were extra options on top of what it already did before, not a mandatory new default.
So for this reason, I'd like to request a version rollback until these issues can be worked out, and I know that this is a request that almost certainly will be immediately denied, but we used to be able to use your product and now we are paying for something we can't count on the same way anymore, eventually, we will be forced to find other ways to perform the same task you once excelled on, even though we really don't want to, which is why I wrote this lengthy post.
Please let me know if this is something we could discuss further
Thank you

Hi Nelson - great feedback thanks! You can revert to version 1.2 here:
https://skimp4sketchup.com/download-skimp/ (scroll to bottom).
Can you please send me your model for testing? I'm going to create a ticket from your post and you can respond with a link to download the model. I am curious if there are issues with your model rather than with Skimp v2. I don't think we made any changes that would cause the mesh to break and lose faces.
We had to make some changes to the preview style to support the display of textures. Clicking the 'textures' button should toggle the display of textures in the preview. But you will only see the effect if your materials have textures. With solid colored materials, you won't notice anything.

Hi Dale!
Thank you very much for your help, it worked perfectly!
To keep the previous version, I was only missing to uncheck the "auto-check for updates" on the prompt that appears when you launch it for the first time after reinstalling it
Now that I can revert whenever necessary, I'm looking forward to new updates on the plug-in!
Thanks again!
Nelson
