    Hi Bob,  a solid is a water-tight volume.  A flat plane is not a solid.  For it to be a solid, you need to extrude the flat plane using the push/pull tool and make sure all of the geometry is contained in a group or component.  

    If the object is a true solid, it will show as a 'solid group' when inspected using the SketchUp Entity Info panel.

    Thanks for the simple explanation!
    And that worked like it should.
    Is there a non-destructive option?
    I guess just make a copy.
    Now I have to learn which is number 1 and which is number 2.
    I guess that is what CTL-Z is for!
