Tool Operation
- (Optional) Preselect a horizontal face.
- Click a horizontal face to generate a hipped roof.
- Click again to define the slope and height of the hipped roof.
Tips
- Key-in an exact slope in degrees instead of clicking a height reference point.
- You can also key-in a slope expressed as RISE:RUN (for example 5:12).
- Double-click to apply the last used slope to a new horizontal face.
- This tool always uses the global model Z direction regardless of the direction of the current sketch axes.
Although this tool only creates hipped roofs, it can be used as a starting point to create gable and shed roofs as well. See below for examples.
Create a Roof with Overhang
- Start with a horizontal face that covers the entire building.
- Use the offset tool to offset the face the distance of the desired overhang.
- Using the Select Tool, double-click the new offset face so both the face and edges are selected.
- Right-click and make the new face into a group.
- Double-click the new group to edit it.
- Fill in the inner loop of edges by drawing a line over an existing edge using the Line Tool. This will create a face that fills in the middle.
- Using the Select Tool, double-click the newly created inner face to select the face and its edges.
- Press Delete to delete the face and edges leaving a single face.
- Push/pull this face the desired height of the fascia.
- Now use the roof tool on the top face to create an overhanging roof.
Create a Gable
These instructions assume that your roof was created from a face that was push/pulled to form an overhanging slab (see above instructions for creating an overhang)
- Explode the group that contains the roof geometry.
- Move the vertex at the peak of the gable to be on the same plane as the edge of the roof. (You may need to press ESCAPE to first clear your selection so you can select an individual vertex)
- Erase the edge that goes across the gable face.
- Select the two sloped edges of the gable and offset them to the height of the fascia.
- Complete the shape of the gable wall face based on your desired soffit style.
- If you've made a complete gable wall face, now use push / pull to align it to the main building wall.
- Use the eraser while holding SHIFT to hide the bottom edge of the triangular gable wall face.
- Open the main building wall group and use the eraser while holding SHIFT to hide the top edge of the wall so that the wall appears continuous with the triangular gable wall.
Create a Shed Roof
These instructions assume that you are starting from a face that was push/pulled to form an overhanging slab (see above instructions for creating an overhang)
- Create a hip roof using the SketchPlus hip roof tool as a starting point.
- Explode the group that contains the roof geometry.
- Select the edge of the roof adjacent to the wall and start moving it upwards along the blue axis. Hold SHIFT to lock the inference and then move your mouse over the sloped roof face to snap the edge to the roof slope. Click to complete the move.
- Use the eraser tool to delete the unwanted roof edges and flip the face if necessary.
- Select the sloping roof edge and copy it downwards the depth of the fascia.
- Cleanup the edges is needed with the eraser tool.
- Use Push/pull to move the triangular gable wall to match up with the building wall.
- Draw a line across the bottom of the gable wall from the soffit to the opposite wall.
- Use the eraser while holding SHIFT to hide the bottom edge of the triangular gable wall face.
- Open the main building wall group and use the eraser tool while holding SHIFT to hide the top edge of the wall so that the wall appears continuous with the triangular gable wall.
- Repeat steps 5-10 on the other side of the roof.
