This is a decision we did not make lightly. After much consideration, we determined that it was not technically feasible for us to maintain old versions of PlaceMaker after version 4 was released.
Version 4 was completely rebuilt and uses a completely new web-based infrastructure. Version 4 uses a new back-end database, and now runs on a remote server. In order to keep the old versions running, we would have had to find some way to keep the old systems and database in sync with the new systems and database while at the same time allowing users to switch back and forth between version 4 and old versions whenever they wished.
The risks of critical errors, data loss, and bad user experience were deemed too great in addition to the large amount of additional effort that would have been required to monkey-patch the version 3 infrastructure to work alongside version 4.
We put a lot of effort into ensuring the most seamless transition for our users to version 4. If you feel that we could have done better, please let us know. We are always looking for feedback for improving the experience of our users.
